I am a 23-year-old student who had been driving for about 4-5ish years now. When I first got my car, my uncle added my car for insurance and I will pay him monthly. I've never had an accident or got any ticket. I recently took a peek at the bill and although I insured my car is not listed as a driver, so I think when I get my own car insurance to build my credit (by paying with a credit card). Anyone have any suggestions on where to start? I'm looking for the cheapest, basic insurance that meets the requirements of the state. I'm tight on money for school so I'm not looking for anything but basic. If it helps any, I live in LA, California. Also, there are tips to know or questions to ask so I do not get ripped off or have additional services added when talking to the insurance rep?
You can pretty much do everything online at this time, so you do not have to get ripped off or extra services There are tons of affordable insurance companies, such as Geico and State Farm and all. Just go to their website and get a quote from them. Do keep in mind that cheap insurance may not be frugal. If you are in a car accident that total your car and you only have a state minimum (the insurance liability only) - You'll come right out of the car. California minimum is as follows: $ 15,000 for injury / death of one person. $ 30,000 for injury / death of more than one person. $ 5,000 for property damage. If you do more damage than that - you are 100% responsible. I live in an area that is much cheaper to live in LA, and even here - did $ 5,000 damage to the property about as easy as making a turn a few seconds too fast. Remember - cheap
It is quite common to see $ 100k + car around where I live / work. If you get a minimal insurance, you better be the most careful driver ever. Given that you are 23, I will err on the side to get more property damage than the legal minimum.
It's usually a good idea, especially the past 23 as well, at least they take your house. permalink parent [-] viper0 2 points 3 months ago Jokes on them because the banks have a home!
It is also important to consider how much your target for a lawsuit. If you are barely making ends meet, then you may be 100% responsible, but you also will be really valuable to sue. If you got more for your name, you need a level of coverage that would ensure that the insurance company aggressive in defending your case. If you have $ 5,000 of coverage and causing $ 200,000 in damage, your insurance company will only pay. If you have $ 100,000 in coverage, they will keep lawyers on it. There is also a moral aspect of it. If you can afford it, you have enough coverage to help repair the damage that you caused. If a person is disabled for life because you made a mistake, it's only fair that your insurance may pay for the damage right.
I am pleased with the General Insurance .. because I Join with Special offer every person can not achieve this coupon offers really Cheapest check the offer 4 points 3 months ago Go to any auto insurance website and make an offer.
What if I save the time and money? I entered "car insurance quotes" into Google and all sorts of things scammy appear. permalink parent [-] Usagii_YO 2 points 3 months ago I feel like this is one area where you do not have to skimp on. Additional $ 25-50 or more a month can really save your butt if the situation ever present itself.
Ya get collision coverage / coverage of uninsured driver / all the good stuff. But do not get insurance property damage more than the state minimum if you even do not have a lot of assets to get started. . They can not bleed radish (.. Do whatever you want, of course I do not mamma or your lawyer:-))
Progressive charged me $ 50 / mo and State Farm costs me $ 29 / mo. As far as I know State Farm does not even have an online portal. But it was cheap so I use it.
Meh, I've been using Esurance for years and never had a problem, but then again I have never had a claim. And I hope I never do, regardless of who is running it. I have a sour taste about Geico after I changed my address (not garaging address) and they increase my rate of $ 20 per month and will not back online in 30ish minutes, although I do not make a policy change. So I shopped around and found a few places that are cheaper and canceled.

I prefer Esurance I get a full 100 / 300K insurance for 2 cars 2007 corolla and 2014 Prius V for $ 103 a month which includes 30k renters insurance. Tenants may be $ 17ish price. The cheapest rate I have found. Be aware of the people 'minimum state' which, if you get into an accident and caused $ 100K damage / health, or others cause issues 100K in damage / health with you ... you are on the hook for any insurance Your car is not covered.
What if you live in No. fault state? In New York if someone hit me - my car insurance pay for my injury and the car, despite harm. And regardless of your coverage buy no maximum 50k they will pay to cover your medical expenses. So not much point in buying a higher limit despite all the effort put insurance sales to try to convince you.
In America very easy to hit 50k health costs. Also the source of that one? And that does not include damage to the car or damage to some people.

Accidents are called accidents for a reason.
then it is your fault and you are on the hook insurance or not. I'm talking about an accident in which you are not guilty.
But 100/300 help if you cause an accident that expensive.
In the real world, the most uninsured or underinsured are so poor they are judgment-proof. You will never see a dime of their loser judge. If you do not have adequate insurance and uninsured some idiot ruins your car and maims you, you have nobody to blame but yourself for not insuring yourself appropriately.
I was going to blame them.
Blame them all you want. You will still be footing the bill. Un (der) insured motorist is expected danger.
Go online and get quotes from several different companies. For me Geico is the cheapest so far. Coverage even cheaper than in other companies.
Look into any company you can. Even people who are difficult to get into (USAA for example, needs to have a family member in the military at some point in their lives). Just get enough info from a ton of dirt from different companies and compare. Expect to spend a few hours researching. It will pay off - literally - in the end
I just switched from Esurance to Progressive because my levels continue to rise for no reason (claims, tickets, etc.). It seems that there is no rhyme or reason to the price for the most part you can easily get a quote online (It's scary to see how much information the company that you have never given data before it has on you.) So spend an hour driving around to get various quotes. Then then every 6 months to evaluate and repeat. AAA is more than 3 times more expensive than others. I do not know what happened there.
AAA is what I use. I only pay for nine months a year for 12 months of service, and it was the cheapest I have found the permalink [-] 1 points mbz321 3 months ago I switched from Esurance to Geico and saved almost 50% ... I can not believe it. I think the weight of heavy GEICO what you pay on your credit score though, and I was above average for my age (24).
I went through a service called Consumer States. I think they are called Goji now. They make a commission sales person per policy sold rather than on price. I'm 21, dude, and I paid $ 350 for six months. It is in Ohio, idk if it's more expensive in CA.
For your own sake, do not buy a minimum of California. It's hit and totaled my car (his fault) and I passengers sued him for injuries. Amount that he will end up having to pay will bajillion times more than what he would've had to pay for better insurance.
As others have pointed out there is no single firm would be the cheapest for everyone. Collect a lot of quotes and decide from there. It's easy to jump from company to company and even mid-term policy if the company continued to increase your premiums (such as Geico did for me). I do not have any loyalty to one company and this has allowed me to get the best price. For what it's worth this time I have a policy with Liberty Mutual and sometimes shop to quote and I do not have any other companies their rates. I am sure they will increase my premiums at some point and I would shop around again
People really about shopping around, but do not do it online. Call the company. You will get better results.
I was probably too late here, but I have Dashers insurance in California. I had some minor violations in the past, as well as DUI, and I still only pay $ 65 / mo. They are not a big company, their website is not flashy, but they offer personalized customer service and payment online. Check it out.
